Saratoga Springs man gets 5-year sentence for car accidents

A 45-year-old man from Saratoga Springs will face a five-year prison sentence after admitting responsibility for two car crashes. In one car accident, another driver was seriously injured.

The man pleaded guilty on Nov. 5 to a felony charge of attempted reckless endangerment for one accident and had previously pleaded guilty to the charges of second-degree assault and second-degree attempted vehicular assault for a separate accident. Overall, the man will serve five years in prison and will serve five years on probation after his release.

Authorities say that the man overturned his Chrysler Sebring and landed on top of another car after hitting a tow truck that was on the side of state Route 50. The district attorney’s office says the man’s blood alcohol content was 0.17, more than twice the legal limit. This accident caused the occupant of the other vehicle serious injuries.

In a separate accident, the man was a passenger in a car with his estranged wife. He tried to jerk the steering wheel of the car and forced the car into the path of an oncoming police cruiser. The officer avoided a head-on collision and pulled the car. No one was injured.

The police officer in that wreck said the wife said the husband may have been trying to kill himself. While that is tragic, people cannot take the law into their own hands and put other people at risk to be collateral damage.
